L’enquête sociologique comme outil de recherche pour l’enseignant d’une langue étrangère
The object of this article is to offer an overview of the possible use of a sociological survey, using a questionnaire, in the field of foreign language research. The specific points which will be examined are the choice between open and closed questions and the consequences of this choice, the risk of introducing a bias and the resulting effects, the use of a flow-chart, the necessity of reducing to a minimum the halo effect, the necessity for a pre-test, the conditions for administering a questionnaire, the coding of open questions in order to facilitate perusal, the use of graphs to better visualise the resulting figures, the importance of layout and finally the necessity of analysing the statistics obtained. It is hoped that this article will encourage newcomers to research work to familiarise themselves with the use of the sociological survey, in order to support hypotheses thus far unproven.
